First Direct Name Change After Marriage: UK Guide (2026)

Learn how to change your name with First Direct after marriage in the UK. Step-by-step guidance on forms, HSBC branch visits, cards, and payments.

First Direct has long been known for its award-winning customer service, but because it operates without its own high street branches, updating your details after getting married works a little differently than it does with traditional banks. You cannot simply walk into a dedicated First Direct branch on a Saturday morning, yet the process remains straightforward and well organised once you know your options.

What First Direct Requires for a Name Change

Like all regulated UK financial institutions, First Direct must comply with strict anti-money laundering and identity verification laws. You cannot update your legal surname through online banking chat or telephone banking alone. You will need to provide official supporting documentation that proves your change of surname.

  • Your original marriage certificate or a certified copy issued by the General Register Office (photocopies and church registry ceremony certificates are not accepted)
  • A signed written instruction containing your account number, sort code, previous legal name, and new legal name
  • Specimens of both your previous signature and your new signature for their mandate records
  • Valid photo identification, such as your updated UK driving licence or passport, if requested by their customer support team

How to Submit Your Marriage Certificate

First Direct gives you two primary routes to submit your paperwork. The first route is by post. You can send a signed letter outlining your name change request along with your official marriage certificate to their head office in Leeds. If you choose this method, always use Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed so your valuable document is fully tracked and insured during transit. First Direct inspects your certificate and posts it back to you promptly via recorded delivery.

The second and often preferred route is using the branch network of HSBC UK, First Direct's parent company. You can take your original marriage certificate and photo ID into any open HSBC branch counter. The branch staff can verify your original documents face to face, stamp an internal certification copy, and securely forward the confirmation to First Direct electronically, meaning you never have to let your certificate out of your sight.

What Happens to Your Cards, App, and Payments

Once First Direct processes your request, your profile is updated across their core systems within two to five working days. Your sort code and account number will not change, which means incoming salary payments, outgoing Direct Debits, and existing standing orders continue running smoothly without any interruption.

First Direct will automatically issue a replacement Visa debit card and any associated credit cards displaying your new surname. When these arrive, you will need to activate them and re-add them to digital wallets such as Apple Pay or Google Wallet, as your old digital tokens linked to your former name will stop working once the old cards are deactivated.

Joint Accounts, Mortgages, and Savings Products

If you hold a joint current account or joint savings account with your partner, both of you do not need to attend an appointment. Only the person changing their name needs to provide the marriage certificate and signature mandate. Your partner's account access, login details, and debit cards remain unaffected.

For existing First Direct mortgages, cash ISAs, or Regular Saver accounts, your name update on your current account will usually filter through automatically to your linked products. However, if your mortgage title requires updating on the Land Registry records simultaneously, First Direct's mortgage administration team may send you an additional confirmation form to countersign.

Practical Tips for First Direct Customers

Before you send off your documents, ensure any pending salary payments or international transfers expected in your former name have cleared into your account. While UK automated clearing handles name discrepancies well when the account details match, having your employer update payroll at the same time prevents administrative queries later.
