Don't Forget These: UK IDs & Memberships After Name Change

Just married in the UK? Beyond the big ones, remember to update your name on loyalty cards, gym memberships, library cards, and more. A practical guide.

Congratulations on your marriage! While the big tasks like updating your passport and driving licence are usually at the forefront of your mind, there's a whole world of smaller, but equally important, IDs and memberships that also need your new name. Overlooking these can cause anything from minor inconvenience to missing out on benefits or even identity confusion. Let's make sure you don't miss a thing.

Why Bother with the Smaller Details?

It’s easy to focus on the essentials – your bank, HMRC, DVLA – and rightly so. But your identity extends beyond these. Think about all the places where your name is recorded, from your local library to your favourite coffee shop loyalty scheme. Keeping these updated ensures consistency across your life, helps with identification, and most importantly, means you won't be left scrambling when you need them most.

Imagine trying to pick up a pre-ordered item with an ID that doesn't match your booking, or not being able to access a service because your membership details are out of date. It's those little moments that can cause unnecessary stress when you're simply trying to enjoy married life. A little effort now saves a lot of hassle later.

Your Everyday Essentials: IDs and Cards

  • Your GP/NHS records: While your GP surgery might not issue a physical card, ensuring your medical records are updated is crucial for prescriptions, referrals, and continuity of care. Contact your practice directly.
  • Dentist and optician records: Similar to your GP, make sure your dental and optical practices have your current name for appointments and insurance purposes.
  • Local library card: A quick visit or phone call to your local library can update your membership. You'll often need to show your marriage certificate.
  • Trade union or professional body memberships: If you're part of any professional organisations, update your details to ensure you continue receiving benefits and communications correctly.
  • Breakdown cover (e.g., AA, RAC): Your breakdown cover is often linked to your driving licence, but it's wise to update your membership directly to avoid any issues if you ever need their help.
  • Local council services: Beyond council tax, this could include things like waste permits or leisure centre memberships operated by your local authority.

Loyalty Programmes and Retailers

In the UK, we love our loyalty points! Don't let your hard-earned rewards go to waste because your name doesn't match. This category includes everything from supermarket reward schemes to beauty product clubs.

Many of these can be updated online through your account settings or by contacting their customer service. For some, like Tesco Clubcard or Boots Advantage Card, you might need to show your marriage certificate in-store or send a copy by post. Make a list of all your cards and log in to each account to check their specific name change process.

Online Accounts and Subscriptions

While we've covered physical cards, don't forget your digital life. This includes a wide range of services you might use daily. Consider streaming services, online shopping accounts, magazine subscriptions, and even gaming platforms. Often, these just need a quick update in your profile settings.

Double-check any linked payment methods too. If your bank card is under your new name, ensure it’s updated on these platforms to prevent payment failures or account suspension. It's a good habit to systematically work through your digital footprint.

Taking the time to update these smaller, often overlooked, IDs and memberships ensures that your new married name is reflected consistently across your life. It’s a bit of administrative housekeeping that will bring peace of mind and prevent future headaches.
