Professional & Social Media Name Change After Marriage UK

Guidance for UK newlyweds on updating their name on professional platforms like LinkedIn and all social media after marriage.

Congratulations on your marriage! While you’re likely basking in that newlywed glow, there’s also the practical side of updating your name where you need to. Beyond the official government bodies and banks, many newlyweds wonder about their professional online presence and social media profiles. It's a common query, and we're here to help you navigate it smoothly. Deciding whether and how to change your name on platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and even your personal or professional email address requires a little thought. Let’s break down how to approach these changes in the UK.

Your Professional Identity: LinkedIn and Work Email

For many, LinkedIn is their professional shop front. Updating your name here is usually straightforward, but it's worth considering the timing, especially if you're in the middle of a job search or a major project. You'll typically find the option to edit your name in your profile settings. Most platforms allow you to change your first, middle, and last name. If you're maintaining your maiden name professionally but adopting your spouse's name personally, you might opt for a hybrid approach on some platforms, or keep LinkedIn entirely in your maiden name to ensure continuity with your career history and published works.

When it comes to your work email address, this is something to discuss with your employer's HR or IT department. They will usually have a process for name changes, which might involve creating a new email address, an alias, or updating your display name. Ensure all internal systems, like your company directory and intranet, are also updated to reflect your chosen name.

Navigating Social Media Name Changes

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok are often where we share our personal news. Changing your name here is more about personal preference. Some people change it right away to reflect their new marital status, while others prefer to keep their maiden name for recognition by friends and family. Each platform has its own settings for name changes, usually found in your personal account settings.

  • Facebook: Go to 'Settings & Privacy' -> 'Settings' -> 'Personal details' -> 'Name'. Be aware that Facebook has a limit on how often you can change your name.
  • Instagram: Tap your profile icon, then 'Edit Profile', and you can change your 'Name' and 'Username' fields. Your username is a unique identifier, so consider if you want to update it.
  • X (formerly Twitter): Go to 'Profile' -> 'Edit Profile' to change your display name. Your username (handle) is separate and can also be changed in 'Settings and privacy' -> 'Your account' -> 'Account information' -> 'Username'.
  • TikTok: Go to your 'Profile' -> 'Edit Profile' to change your 'Name' (what people see on your profile) and 'Username' (your unique handle). TikTok also has restrictions on how often you can change your username.

Remember to update your privacy settings if you make drastic changes, especially if you now have a different professional name versus your social media name.

The Choice to Double-Barrel or Keep Your Maiden Name

If you've opted for a double-barrelled surname, or decided to keep your maiden name for professional reasons while using your married name personally, these platforms generally accommodate that. For double-barrelled names, simply enter both surnames. If you're keeping your maiden name professionally, you might choose to only update your personal social media profiles with your married name, leaving professional ones untouched. This flexibility allows you to manage your identity as you see fit across different spheres.

Other Online Accounts and Digital Footprint

Don't forget other online platforms where you might have an account: shopping websites, forums, online communities, or even gaming profiles. While less formal than your bank or passport, consistency helps with password resets and generally maintaining a clear digital identity. Update these at your leisure, usually within your account settings.

Changing your name across professional platforms and social media is often one of the less pressured parts of the name change journey. Take your time, consider your professional brand, and update what feels right for you. Your marriage certificate is your key document for making most of these changes, and with a bit of planning, you'll have your digital life perfectly reflecting your new status.
