It's free, but it's not online
The DVLA does not let you change your name online. You'll need to post your application using form D1 (available at most Post Offices or downloadable from gov.uk).
What to send
- Completed D1 form
- Your current photocard driving licence
- Your original marriage certificate (it will be returned)
If you own a car
Don't forget your V5C log book — section 6 covers a change of name for the registered keeper. Send it to the same Swansea address, again with your marriage certificate. There's no charge.
Update car insurance the same day
Your insurer needs your name to match your licence. Most allow a name change in-app or with a quick call — there's no admin fee for a name change in 2026 at most major UK insurers.
