TSB Name Change After Marriage: UK Guide (2026)

Find out how to update your name with TSB after marriage. Learn what documents you need, how in-branch and postal requests work, and when new cards arrive.

Updating your bank accounts is often one of the most reassuring steps after getting married. Once your everyday current account reflects your new surname, paying bills, depositing cheques, and matching payments with your payroll becomes seamless. If you bank with TSB, updating your personal records is relatively straightforward, whether you prefer walking into your local branch or handling paperwork by post.

What documents does TSB require for a married name change?

TSB requires official evidence of your change of name before they can amend your account details. Like most high street banks in the UK, they will not accept photocopies or digital smartphone photos of your marriage certificate sent over email. You will need to present an official document issued by the General Register Office or religious authority.

  • Your original government-issued marriage certificate or civil partnership schedule (or a certified copy stamped by a solicitor or notary).
  • Your existing TSB debit card, credit card, or savings passbook.
  • A valid form of photographic identification, such as your UK passport or photocard driving licence in either your previous or new name.
  • Your current PIN to verify your identity if you choose to visit a branch counter in person.
  • A signed covering letter containing your account number, sort code, old signature, and new signature if applying by post.

Updating your details at a TSB branch

Visiting a local branch remains the fastest way to complete your name change with TSB. You do not usually need to book an appointment in advance for a routine administrative update. When you arrive, speak to a customer service assistant at the counter or reception desk and explain that you would like to register a change of name following your marriage.

The branch colleague will examine your original marriage certificate, verify your identity using your card and PIN or photographic ID, and update your personal record on the internal banking system. They will hand your original certificate straight back to you across the counter, removing any worry about precious documents getting mislaid in the postal system. The record updates on their central database almost immediately.

Changing your name with TSB by post

If you do not live near an open TSB branch or find it tricky to visit during weekday opening hours, you can complete the process by post. Write a short covering letter stating your full previous name, your new married name, your residential address, contact telephone number, and the account numbers for all TSB accounts you hold. Make sure you sign the letter with both your previous signature and your new signature.

Enclose your original marriage certificate or a certified copy, together with a certified copy of your photo identification. Send your package using Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed so you can track the parcel and ensure your paperwork travels securely. TSB will review the paperwork, update your profiles, and return your original document to your registered home address via secure mail within ten working days.

Cards, online banking, joint accounts, and mortgages

Once TSB processes your request, your internet banking and mobile app will update automatically within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Your login details, security credentials, account numbers, and sort codes will stay exactly the same. TSB will automatically order a replacement contactless debit card and credit card in your new name, which typically arrive in plain envelopes within five to seven working days.

If you hold a joint current account or joint savings with your partner, only the spouse changing their surname needs to provide evidence, though both account holders may be asked to sign the branch form to confirm the mandate. If you hold a TSB residential mortgage, letting the branch or postal team know will ensure your mortgage statements and correspondence are updated alongside your everyday savings and current accounts.

Taking the time to organise your banking documents ensures your financial life runs smoothly under your new surname. Once your TSB accounts are switched over, you can use your updated bank statements as formal proof of address to help complete remaining updates across workplace payroll, insurance policies, and government agencies.
